It’s a personal choice, and one that is based on lifestyle, time available to wash and style hair on a daily basis, and also the overall health of the hair. No clear-cut winner yet on this season’s Dancing with the Stars. For once there isn’t an Olympic ice skater or an actress/dancer who’s father is a Broadway choreographer. This year it appears to be a fairly even playing field.

As a hairdresser I appreciate seeing healthy long hairstyles worn by women of all ages, including twenty-something Kendra and the young-at-heart former “Cheers” star Kirstie Alley. Their hair is a great outward representation of the spunk and fun they bring to their performances, and each gets a “10” from this Pasadena/Los Angeles-based hairstylist.

Soul Surfer – The Movie, The Hair, The Message

This weekend my wife and I had the pleasure of watching “Soul Surfer,” the movie inspired by the true story of shark attack survivor/surfer Bethany Hamilton. Diane cried five times, and teen guys in the theater were crying too! Soul Surfer is a movie everyone must see. Bethany’s courage and faith in God are just incredible.

Since I’m a hair stylist (at Evolutions in Pasadena, California), a Christian, and a former surfer, I loved the natural, laid-back hair styles in this movie. There’s not too much a stylist can do with beach hair, but the the hair team nailed the natural highlights and carefree surfer-girl hair sported by the young actresses who portrayed Bethany and her best friend Alana. Helen Hunt’s hair looked so natural and beautiful, and Carrie Underwood’s hair, and her performance  as the Calvary Chapel youth pastor, were spot-on.
